Back to winter mode! Next storm Wed PM/Thurs

Summary

We got 3"-7" of freshies and a dramatic cool-down across Idaho over the weekend to provide a fresh coating of *pow* for skiers/riders. The Low Pressure trough to our south will send unstable weather our way throughout this week. A weak storm front will roll through Tuesday, and a more potent storm Wed PM/Thursday, with 5"-10" possible. Skies clear by next weekend.

Short Term Forecast

Brundage got 6" out of the weekend storm cycle, and this powder hound found some freshies in the trees. (Courtesy Brundage Mountain Resort).

Notable snow totals over the last 48 hours:

  • Bogus Basin - 6"
  • Brundage - 6"
  • Pebble Creek - 5"
  • Tamarack - 4.5"
  • Silver Mountain - 5" in the last 24, 7" in the last 48
  • Schweitzer - 3"-9" in the last 48
  • Lookout - 3"-5"
  • Pomerelle - 3"
  • Sun Valley - 2"

Light snow and unsettled weather are forecast in the mountains generally on Monday. We've got some pockets of sunshine at Sun Valley, Bogus, Brundage, Tamarack, and Pomerelle to start off the week. In N. Idaho, clouds and light snow are possible during the ski/ride day but no significant accumulation is expected.

The next storm with significant snow quantities will come through Idaho on Wed PM/Thursday. In Northern Idaho, Schweitzer could get up to 9" out of that system, Silver 6"-8", and less quantity at Lookout if forecast temps stay warm there with a high of 39 degrees on Thursday when there's 100 percent chance of precip. We'll see.

In Central Idaho, Brundage could get 2" Tuesday and then another 9" by EOD Thursday. Tamarack is forecast to get 5" by Thursday. Daytime high temps at Bogus are expected to bring a wintry mix or all rain on Wed PM/Thursday as things stand now with a high of 45 degrees on Thursday. Yet I'm seeing snow levels below the base area, so that remains to be seen.

Sun Valley could get up to 9" by EOD Thursday, even with a SW flow to the storm front. Pomerelle will get just light snow 2"-4" by Thursday EOD and Pebble maybe up to 6."

Extended Forecast

Skies are expected to clear off by Saturday or partly cloudy anyway as another Low trough will be trying to move inland later in the week and then it moves south, taking more precip and snow with it.

So we should be back into a little bit of spring skiing mode by the weekend. OpenSnow also shows it will dry out this weekend, and it will remain dry moving into the first week of April.

Thanks for reading. My next forecast will be on Wednesday, March 27.

NEW: Snow Ratio Forecast

You can now get a good idea of the upcoming snow quality for the next storm via our new "Snow Ratio" forecast for any location in OpenSnow.

When we talk about snow quality, such as “light and fluffy” or “heavy and wet”, we are talking about the snow-to-liquid ratio. The higher the snow-to-liquid ratio, the lighter the snow quality, and vice-versa.

  1. Go to any location screen and tap the "Snow Summary" tab.
  2. Scroll down to the 5-day hourly or 10-day forecast section.
  3. View the 5-day hourly or daily "Snow Ratio" forecast for the next 10 days.

10:1 will be fun but will feel a little heavy. 15:1 will offer some faceshots and feel pretty light. 20:1 will be incredibly light, almost like skiing through nothing but air.

This new feature is currently available with the latest version of the OpenSnow iOS app installed (App Store > OpenSnow > Update) or on the OpenSnow website (OpenSnow.com). It will be available in the OpenSnow Android app soon.
