Weekend Update

Summary

Snow showers and windy conditions will continue into Saturday before winds start to subside by Sunday morning. Conditions could start out a little icy both Saturday and Sunday before the sun and warmer temperatures soften the snow.

Short Term Forecast

Weekend Forecast:

After initially starting as rain (heavy rain caused Big Snow Resort to close for the season), this week's storm has brought some snow over the past 24 hours with Bohemia and Lutsen picking up a few inches as of Thursday.

Lutsen could pick up another inch or so from the heavier snow showers and Bohemia could receive another 1-3 from snow showers and lake effect snow through Saturday morning.

I would still expect it to be rather icy under this fresh snow after all of the rain they recently received but with the higher sun angle and slightly warmer temperatures this weekend it could soften things up a little. Lutsen announced they would keep open some bonus terrain this weekend!

Down at Granite Peak, highs will be in the 30s both Friday and Saturday with gusty winds, especially on Friday. If I were to pick a day to ski, it would probably be Saturday, with less wind and slightly warmer temps which should soften the slopes.

Boyne Mountain, which I believe is the only other resort open this weekend, could see a little light snow Friday into Saturday, with highs in the middle 30s Saturday and low 40s Sunday. Sunday could be a great day for spring conditions with some sun that should help soften the snow.

ECMWF forecast precipitation types through Saturday midday:

Extended Forecast

Snow is possible Sunday night into Monday, especially for Lutsen and Bohemia before yet another system arrives for Tuesday into Wednesday that is likely to bring a mix of rain and snow.

Monday could offer the opportunity to enjoy some fresh snow if you are willing to hike or skin up at locations that allow it in the UP and northeast Minnesota. As of now, I don't believe anyone will be spinning chairs on Monday despite the bonus snow.

Next weekend, April 23-24, looks to bring a warming trend, which could mean that the only two remaining resorts open will be Bohemia and Lutsen.

We'll have to see if any other resorts can remain open for a bonus weekend - the cold and snow have lingered in April, allowing some bonus weekends for multiple locations.

Look for the next forecast next week unless the forecast warrants an update this weekend.
