Sunny weekend to enjoy that little bit of fresh snow...

Summary

Mountain weather prediction in Montana is quite challenging and these past few days have been perhaps the most challenging circumstances I’ve encountered this season. What looked like a long and very moist NW feed of moisture kind of ran out of juice before the arctic air (the supposed catalyst for the storm) arrived. I’m a skier/rider as well and I too have been disappointed that some of those rather large snowfall predictions I’ve made over the last few days have not even come close to fruition. Well…maybe 50% right with Great Divide and Showdown but I got it totally wrong at Whitefish, Big Sky, Bridger, Lookout, Lost Trail and the list goes on. Thursday night into Friday morning Lookout ended up receiving the most on the Westside with around 6-8”, Snowbowl 5”, Lost Trail and Discovery 4”. Eastsider’s received 5” at Great Divide, 3” at Showdown and 2” at Big Sky and Bridger. The big story out of all this weather is the wind and the cold. We went from January thaw to Antarctic frigid in under 24hours – Whitefish dipped 40 degrees in a 4-hour time span Thursday evening! Anyway – sorry for the disappointment but we do have some new snow…and what looks like a nice sunny and cold weekend to enjoy those excellent conditions. There are worse places to be!
