Snow for Everyone!

Summary

Heavy, wet snow is falling all over the Northeast and we couldn’t be happier. More snow will fall throughout the day today, leaving most resorts with near (possibly more than) a foot of snow. High pressure quickly gains control by the weekend, bringing calmer weather for some really soft weekend turns. Low pressure will then materialize and make its impacts on New England by the end of the weekend, potentially bringing snowpack damaging rain.

Short Term Forecast

Good morning, everyone and happy snow day! Powder is out there for everyone to enjoy and the snow is still coming down all across our region, allowing for freshies all day long. Here are the latest snow totals from some New England resorts and the latest radar image loop:

Mount Snow: 15”

Killington: 8”

Wildcat: 8”

Sugarloaf: 8”

Sunday River: 10”

Loon: 4”

Bretton Woods: 7”

Jay Peak: 6”

Don’t expect this to be fluffy champagne powder, as the rain/ snow line will creep through southeastern to central New Hampshire and much of southern Maine as the low progresses northeastward. Most areas will be left with with wetter and heavier snow, with daytime accumulations reaching another 4-8 inches. Road conditions on the way to the hill will be slick today, be sure to travel with caution, there will be plenty of snow for everyone.

As the low settles over interior Maine through Tuesday evening, cold air will be wrapped into the system and any remaining precipitation will fall as snow. Upslope snow showers will persist through the day on Wednesday, contributing to another 2-5 inches in the mountains.

Extended Forecast

After the low leaves the northeast, high pressure will quickly build into the region by the weekend. Lingering upslope snow showers will affect the more northern regions of New England through Thursday, likely contributing to negligible accumulations. Snow conditions leading into the weekend will be very soft and carvable once the groomers get a chance to smooth trails out. On Saturday, a weak disturbance will spark up snow showers across most of Vermont and New Hampshire during the early morning hours. However, snow accumulations will be minimal as the event will be short lived.

A low pressure system is looking like it will materialize and affect our region by Sunday morning. However, the exact track of the storm has yet to be resolved by the dominant global models. The ECMWF tracks the low through the Midwest, which would send a shot of warm air and light rain showers to the New England region. On the other hand, the GFS suggests a track straight through New England, which would still bring warmer air and much heavier rainfall than predicted by the ECMWF. Here is the latest run of the GFS showing the potential rain:
