Light snow is falling across New England on Saturday associated with the combination of a trough of cold air aloft and an area of weak low pressure at the surface. The forcing for these snow showers, first a warm front and then a cold front, should clear through the area on Saturday afternoon with light accumulations across the North Country (0-1"). As the cold front sweeps through Maine beneath the trough aloft later this afternoon and evening there is a chance at some snow squalls that could make for some upper wind holds and reduced visibilities near last chair at Sugarloaf.

More light snow is expected for at least the northwest portion of New England and northern New York on Sunday as another region of low pressure moves from the Great Lakes into Maine. The best chances for accumulating snow will be in the Adirondacks and northern Green Mountains where 2-3" is possible. Our OpenSnow blend has 2-5" at both Whiteface and Jay with just 0-1" at Killington. 

The Week Ahead

The word of the week should be unsettled with persistent northwest flow delivering periodic rounds of light snow under cloudy skies. Snow showers look possible at least every day with foci on Monday afternoon, Wednesday, early Thursday, and again on Friday. None of these events look particularly impactful with odds of 0-1" pretty high, but odds >3" pretty low. The best chances for accumulation will be across northern Vermont where we have snow each day at (e.g.,) Smuggs and Jay.

The other piece of the forecast that we're watching is some of the winter's coldest temperatures potentially arriving for next weekend. It's been relatively mild in New England since about Christmas Eve and this would be the coldest air in at least a month. Combined with some post-Arctic-front winds, the windchill temperature on Friday should dip below 0F and on Saturday morning dip below -20F across most resorts. If the forecast holds, expect to see some windchill watches and/or warnings come out of the National Weather Service. The GFS model shown here is probably a bit aggressive (it has a known cold bias), but nevertheless it's worth keeping an eye on if you have skiing places next weekend.
