And...That's a Wrap!

Summary

Spring temperatures are up to a seasonal average, with more summer-like days coming up for the weekend. This will be the last weekend for many of the remaining resorts as the season comes to a balmy close.

Short Term Forecast

We are approaching the end of a wonderful winter season here in New England, as temperatures rise, snow pack melts, and the feeling of spring returns to our region. While a late April snowstorm is always a possibility, the models show no sign of a drastic drop in temperatures to allow any of these low pressure systems to become a blizzard for the northern folk of the northeast.

Temperatures for today will be similar to what we have seen over the past week, with highs in the upper 50’s, nearing 60. The winds have decreased significantly, however, so these temperatures will not feel as brisk as what we have been experiencing.

High pressure will move in through the course of today and remain on the eastern seaboard through the day tomorrow, gracing us with partly cloudy to clear skies for the start of the weekend. In addition, Saturday’s high will be a noticeable change in the warm direction, as temperatures will again be in the upper 60’s and nearing 70. Here's our view from the roof of the Boyd Science Building this morning, with almost no clouds in sight.

With the close of the season, some remaining mountains will be having their final ‘slush events’ over the course of this weekend, including our nearby Cannon Mountain on Saturday. Between Saturday and Sunday’s temperatures, it’s looking to quite warm for those heading out to celebrate the lasts days of the official season on the mountains.

Extended Forecast

Sunday, like the preceding week, will be the pick of the weekend as highs reach into the upper 70’s and near 80, well above average for this time of year. However, there will be some rain showers to look for as a weak low pressure system moves to our north and drops some precipitation on New England. The heaviest rain, amounting to no more than a few 10ths of an inch, will likely come overnight Saturday and early Sunday morning, while some scattered showers may be expected throughout the day Sunday.

This is fairly good news for the many resorts that will be celebrating their final day on Sunday the 16th, including Cannon, Smuggler’s Notch, Okemo, and Bretton Woods on the 17th.

Another weak low will move in on Monday and bring some additional rain showers along a cold front, causing temperatures to drop back into the 50’s for Monday and Tuesday. It looks to remain in this seasonal temperature range for the remainder of the week, with more chances for precipitation on Wednesday and Thursday.
