Snow showers possible for the weekend

Summary

Today will be mostly cloudy with some partial clearing expected in the afternoon. Temperatures will remain in the low- to mid-30s throughout the day. Colder temperatures move in overnight as a weak ridge begins to build over New England. The weekend will bring a chance for some light snow showers in the mountains, but the approaching low pressure system is anticipated to affect mainly coastal areas. Winter conditions are on the way for next week, bringing colder temperatures and an increased chance of snowfall.

Short Term Forecast

Good morning New England! Today’s forecast looks to be partly cloudy with some partial clearing expected this afternoon. Temperatures in the mountains will reach the low- to mid- 30s during the day today. Colder temperatures that moved into the area late yesterday afternoon and overnight allowed for many resorts to increase their snowmaking efforts. There is a slight possibility for the mountains to see a brief snow shower today. The current radar image along with many of the models display a series of thin bands of snow coming from our west off of the Great Lakes. However, the chance for accumulation is unlikely, aside from a dusting possible at higher elevations.

Temperatures will drop into the 20s overnight tonight as a slight ridge begins to build over New England. Temperatures will remain on the colder side into Friday, with highs in the upper-20s at summit altitudes and lower-30s towards the base. Expect mostly cloudy skies and a light SW wind.

The chance for snow increases on Saturday. The morning hours will bring temperatures in the upper-20s under partly cloudy skies before a coastal low pressure system travels northeastward along the New England coast. Light snow showers are possible for the mountains, mainly for New Hampshire and Maine. There is a low chance of snow accumulations at this point, as the track of this storm will affect mainly coastal regions.

Extended Forecast

This coastal storm will continue to move northeastward and produce precipitation into Sunday. There is a possibility for some resorts in Maine to receive about an inch from this storm, but we will continue to monitor this in our upcoming weekend forecasts. Snow showers will be mostly past our area on Sunday morning, with the exception of some lingering upslope snow showers in the mountains. Colder temperatures arrive on Sunday night, with lows in the teens expected in the Mt. Washington Valley and Carrabassett Valley regions. Expect mostly cloudy conditions Monday into Tuesday as another low pressure system approaches the region. This storm has the chance to produce significant snowfall for several resorts, which we will continue to monitor in our upcoming forecasts.
