Fresh Powder on The Way

Summary

Clear conditions for Friday and Saturday. Sunday looks to bring a good amount of powder to the slopes. Next Tuesday also looks to bring a decent amount of snow to the region.

Short Term Forecast

Good Morning everyone, it’s a chilly start out there. Temperatures are below freezing across the region, with winds on the calmer side. If you’re heading out today, high temperatures on the slopes won’t go above freezing. Make sure you wear the necessary layers when you finally get on the lift today! Here’s the current webcam from Bretton Woods:

Saturday will bring clear conditions, with slightly warmer temperatures as today. Tomorrow won’t be a bad day to head out, but Sunday looks to be the best day of the season so far. A classic Nor’easter will dump a large amount of snow on the region Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Here’s the breakdown:

  • The storm will move up from the south, so Connecticut will see the first flakes from the storm. That will start Saturday morning.
  • The northern resorts won’t start seeing any snow until about mid-afternoon Saturday. If your local resort has the ability to light up the slopes past 4:00 P.M., Saturday would be the day to stay out.
  • It’s going to snow all night long Saturday into Sunday, with storm starting to taper off Sunday afternoon. It’s going to be an absolute powder day on the slopes everyone. If you have the time, get out there this Sunday. It’s what we skiers live for!
  • Totals by the end of Sunday: 2”-3” in the Greens, 4”-6” in the Whites, 2”-4” for the Sunday River/Saddleback area.

Extended Forecast

After the long-awaited first significant snowfall accumulates on Saturday and Sunday, another disturbance looks to be developing to our west, potentially bringing even more accumulations to much of New England.

Temperatures will remain cold on Monday, with high barely reaching into the 30s, and overnight lows dipping into the teens. Some snow showers may appear in the morning and afternoon hours, preceding a much more developed low pressure system.

This storm will move in early Tuesday morning, bringing the potential for accumulations reaching 6 inches or more in the mountains by the time it departs on Wednesday. Depending on how the system shifts west or east, there may be some mixing possible along the shoreline. As of now, the deep pocket of cold air centered over New England looks to make this an all-snow storm, though it is still too early to make any exact assumptions just yet. Here is the current GFS model run:

It is clear, however, that there will be even colder temperatures following in the wake of this system. A digging upper level trough will bring high temperatures into the low to mid 20’s, while overnight lows will be in the single digits for the remainder of the work week. Always remember to dress for the weather if you are out seeking fresh snowfall on the slopes next week.

Check back in tomorrow for the brief weekend update, providing information on Saturday’s storm and the potential for more fresh powder next week.
