The storm of the season has delivered the goods

Summary

The season's biggest storm has left New Zealand with a substantial snowfall, hitting the Southern Lakes with over 50-60cm, and even more in Canterbury! Wednesday promises excellent powder skiing, though the combination of cloud cover and icy winds will create significant wind chill. From Thursday, expect clearer skies and diminishing winds for perfect skiing conditions through the weekend.

Short Term Forecast

Wednesday & Thursday (31st July & 1st August)

Early morning Wednesday will have light snowfall that will clear up in the Southern Lakes, making way for a brighter day as clouds disperse. The cloud will clear for up for a sunny day on Thrusday, but brace for very cold easterly winds!

In Canterbury, snow continues to reach down to about 300m, impacting some roads and towns. The snow will clear most ski fields Thursday morning with an additional 10-15cm expected, but they'll persist into the night for Mt Lyford in the north, where about 30-40cm more should accumulate. Icy southeast winds across the South Island will gradually diminish.

Friday to Sunday (2nd to 4th August)

A ridge of high pressure moving up from the south from Friday to Sunday will bring fantastic, sunny weather to South Island resorts. The icy southeast winds will gradually die out before light westerlies develop on Sunday. These will be some of the best days of the season, so lock it in!

Extended Forecast

Throughout next week, expect a few light snow showers brought on by a series of minor storms, likely favouring the Southern Lakes region. Additionally, strong west-to-southwest winds are anticipated to start from next Wednesday and could persist for several days.

Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
