Forecasts Chopping & Changing as Tasman Storm Approaches
Summary
New Zealand resorts had a great weekend, with Coronet Peak and Treble Cone ending their seasons on a high. Monday will be fine, but heavy rain is expected from Tuesday night through early Friday as a low-pressure system moves in. While snow was initially expected, it now looks like cold air will remain south of the Southern Lakes, keeping conditions warmer.
Short Term Forecast
Monday & Tuesday (30th September & 1st October)
Monday will be warm and sunny for all South Island resorts and Mt Ruapehu, with some high cloud and increasing northwest winds. On Tuesday, high cloud will cover the South Island as winds strengthen, with snow turning to rain overnight in the Southern Lakes. Mt Ruapehu will have a mostly clear, sunny day.
Wednesday to Friday (2nd to 4th October)
Wednesday will bring heavy rain to the Southern Lakes and gusty winds, with gale northwesterlies in Canterbury and rain spreading through the region. Mt Ruapehu will see drizzle turning to rain by evening. Thursday will be cloudy with rain at South Island resorts, potentially turning to snow at night. Heavy rain and gale winds at Mt Ruapehu will ease by dawn. Friday will have occasional rain for New Zealand resorts.
Extended Forecast
A Tasman Low will cross the country on Saturday, followed by another system on Sunday, with strong north-to-northwest winds expected for Canterbury and Mt Ruapehu over the weekend.
Thanks for reading. I'll continue to provide these forecasts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday throughout the southern hemisphere season.
