Another Big Load for Canterbury, Just a Dusting for Southern Lakes

Summary

NZ ski season kicks off this weekend with great conditions. Mt Hutt scored 97cm and more snow is due midweek. Canterbury will see decent falls, though rain may hit lower slopes. Southern Lakes got 15–25cm and should be sunny for Opening Weekend.

Short Term Forecast

Forecast for Wednesday 10th to Friday 12th June

Wednesday brings cloud and light snow to the Southern Lakes, with flurries at Treble Cone spreading overnight. In Canterbury, rain turns to snow by evening, with 5–15cm possible.

On Thursday, snow clears from the Lakes, though Treble Cone may see lingering flurries. Canterbury stays snowy with easterly winds, though lower slopes may see rain or sleet. Totals could reach 10–25cm, or more up high.

Friday looks cloudy and cold in the Lakes. Canterbury sees strong snowfalls early, easing later. Mt Hutt could pick up 15–20cm for Opening Day, with 5–15cm for other fields.

Forecast for the Weekend, the 13th & 14th June

Saturday brings a calm, sunny start to the season in the Southern Lakes, while lingering snow clears early in Canterbury, making way for a clear, settled afternoon. Chilly temps will help snowmaking.

Sunday delivers another beautiful day across the South Island with sunshine, light winds, and cold conditions—ideal for early-season skiing and snow production.

Extended Forecast

High pressure is expected to dominate the South Island next week, bringing settled weather and cold temps, which will be ideal for snowmaking.

Northern Canterbury may see good snow early in the week, particularly around Mt Lyford ahead of its June 26 opening. There’s also a chance of mixed rain and snow around the weekend of June 21–22.

Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out early Friday.
