Another Round of Snow before Ski Fields Open this Weekend
Summary
Opening Weekend is looking great for South Island ski fields after recent storms. Mt Hutt got over 90cm, and Southern Lakes saw good snow and snowmaking. More snow is due, especially in Canterbury, setting up one of the best starts in years.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Monday 9th & Tuesday 10th June
Canterbury will see more snow to low levels Monday morning before easing later in the day, with Mt Hutt likely picking up 5–15cm. In the Southern Lakes, cold air and light winds will support strong snowmaking under clearing skies. After another cold night, high cloud will signal a front arriving Tuesday night, bringing 5–10cm to Canterbury and lighter snow to western Southern Lakes fields. Snow may be heavier and slightly wet.
Forecast for Wednesday 11th to Friday 13th June
Canterbury may see some morning and evening rain on Wednesday, with snow on higher elevations. Snow will reach the Southern Lakes later in the day on an easterly breeze, delivering 3–7cm of heavy snow. On Thursday, snow will start high in Canterbury before dropping to lower levels as colder winds arrive, with solid totals likely. The Southern Lakes may get a bit more snow before clearing, with sunshine expected Friday.
Extended Forecast
Opening Weekend is shaping up to be a beauty, with clear skies and sunshine expected across the mountains. Overnight lows will dip nicely, giving snowmakers prime conditions.
Canterbury’s snow should ease by Friday afternoon or early Saturday, making way for settled, calm weather through Sunday—ideal for getting out there.
Looking ahead, a cold southerly mid-next week (around the 18th–19th) looks set to deliver fresh snow, promising another excellent weekend as the season kicks off strong.
Thanks for reading. The next forecast will be out early Wednesday.
