Warm Through the Weekend, Light Snow Early Next Week
Summary
The warm weather continues this weekend and into early next week. Light snow is possible for the northern resorts early next week, with the next storm arriving around the 9th.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Friday 8/4 - Sunday 8/6
The anomalously warm air mass we’ve been dealing with all weak will remain in place through the weekend. The primary culprits are the jet stream and an area of high pressure located over the central part of South America.
Together, these features are pumping warm air from the north into the region, as seen below.
As air flows counter clock wise around the high pressure, it brings warmer air from the north into northern Chile and Argentina. The jet stream, shown below, has a similar effect, pulling down warmer air from the north into the region.
The high pressure has started shifting east, which has moderated the heat somewhat. Still, resorts in the north have been experiencing spring like conditions all week.
Conditions remain warm and dry through the weekend.
Forecast for Monday 8/7 - Tuesday 8/8
A weak storm is on tap for the northern resorts on Monday and Tuesday. The details have remained mostly the same for this event, with <15 cms expected. Temperatures will be on the warm side, but the higher elevations of the northern resorts should keep things as snow.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Wednesday 8/9 - Sunday 8/13
Our next more noteworthy storm should arrive on Wednesday August 9th and continue through Friday the 11th. Another storm is possible on its heals beginning on Saturday.
The upper level area of low pressure responsible for the storm arriving on the 9th will be pushing farther north than most storms this year. This will allow for some snow at the northern resorts in addition to those in the central and southern regions. Although this will likely not be as big as some storms this season, a return to snow after the spring like weather will be welcome.
Early estimates for this event will be in the 20 - 40 cm range for central and southern resorts and 10 - 20 cms in the north.
I will have more details on this storm next week.
