South America Daily Snow

All Aboard the Storm Train, Very Active Over the Next 10 Days!
Summary
We'll see a warm storm to start the week, but temperatures will be dropping with a changeover to snow for most. Later in the week, a cooler storm is on the menu, with solid totals expected. The pattern remains active next week, with the models showing the potential for some huge snow totals.
Short Term Forecast
Forecast for Monday 8/14 - Tuesday 8/15
The first storm in this series is already underway this Monday morning, with snow turning to rain as a warm front pushed south through the central and southern resorts overnight. We will start to cool off though through the day today, with rain slowly turning back to snow. Still, snow levels will be on the high side so most mid and low elevations won't see much snow through Tuesday. On Tuesday night the cold front continues to advance to the north, allowing snow to begin to accumulate at the higher elevation resorts in the central region, including Corralco, Pucon, and Nevados de Chillan.
Check out the snow from the European model for this period below. You can see the sparse snowfall during this period as a result of the high snow levels.
Forecast for Wednesday 8/16 - Saturday 8/19
By Wednesday morning, the next storm will be close enough to the coast to allow precipitation to continue. Expect 15 - 30 cms for Corralco, Pucon, and Nevados de Chillan at mid elevations, with considerably less lower down and at other low elevations resorts. Temperatures will warm up a bit again on Wednesday, before another cooling trend starting Wednesday night.
Precipitation won't be too heavy during this time, but will intensify again on Thursday. Once again, higher elevation resorts should see 10 - 20 cms during this time, with < 10 cms a low elevation resorts and lower elevations overall.
The snow and rain will become lighter during the day on Friday before another wave of heavier precipitation arrives Friday night. With similar snow levels though, we'll see more of the same set up. Higher elevation resorts should see significant snow, with another 15 - 30 cms at resorts like Corralco, Pucon, and Nevados de Chillan. This round of snow will spread farther north, with accumulating snow at the northern resorts including Portillo, Las Lenas, and Valle Nevado. With their higher elevations, they could see 15 - 40 + cms at mid and upper elevations. These totals are expected through the end of the day on Saturday. Note that the timing of this round of snow could change a bit before then, and I will have an update on this storm on Wednesday.
Check out the snow from the Canadian model for this period below. I believe these totals are a bit overdone, again because of the high snow levels, but you can see the more widespread nature of the snowfall accumulations during this period, including the northern resorts.
Forecast for Sunday 8/20 - Wednesday 8/23
For the third storm in this series, the models are not yet in agreement. It looks like another significant round of snow is possible, starting as early as Saturday night. Snow levels may be high initially, but should drop considerably during the storm, which may continue through Wednesday. This period has the potential for 50 - 100 + cms! Check out the potential snow from the Canadian model for this period!
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Thursday 8/24 - Monday 8/28
We're getting into fantasy land here, but all models do show the potential for more storms for the last week of August. Way too early to get into details, but if you're in South America this month, it looks like there will be plenty of chances to ski/ride powder in the coming weeks.
