Big Storm Wrapping Up, Warm Storm On Tap For the Weekend

Summary

Our big storm is wrapping up today (Friday), with some impressive snow totals A warm storm will impact the central and southern mountains this weekend, and the pattern remains active moving forward. More cold storms are possible starting around the 18th.

Short Term Forecast

A lot of snowy scenes yesterday across the Andes, as the storm continued to deliver heavy snow to the region. Conditions looked great on Thursday with more snow throughout the day. Some totals as of Friday afternoon (updated 10 AM MST):

Las Lenas: 30 - 35 cms

Valle Nevado: 18 cms

Portillo: 15 cms

Nevados de Chillan: 45 cms

Corralco: 30 cms

Chapelco: 5 cms (base) - 52 cms (mid)

Antillanca: 10 cms

If I get any updates on these later today I will post them. Check out some shots from yesterday below.

Forecast for Friday 8/11 - Tuesday 8/15

We'll have some lingering snow showers Friday morning before the snow tapers off in the afternoon. Our next system arrives around midday on Saturday. This storm is taking a more southerly track, so impacts will be limited to the southern resorts in the central zone as well as the southern zone. Cold air in place will allow for some snow to start, but warm air will quickly transition precipitation to rain Saturday night through Sunday morning.

Rain will then continue off and on through Tuesday, heavy at times. This storm has a lot of moisture too, as you can see in the total precipitation forecast from the GFS from Saturday through Tuesday.

Temperatures will start to cool off on Tuesday with a gradual transition back to snow, although, with little moisture left, accumulations will be minimal.

Forecast for Wednesday 8/16 - Thursday 8/17

Another upper-level low-pressure system, taking a more northerly track, will approach the west coast of South America Tuesday night, bringing more moisture and a reinforcement of cold air. Any lingering rain will turn back to snow, with snow filling into the north as well. The heaviest totals will be in the central and northern resorts, where > 30 cms are possible. Below is the snow forecast from the Canadian model, showing where the heaviest snow should be.

I will have more details on snow totals in Monday's post.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Friday 8/18 - Tuesday 8/22

As previously mentioned, another storm is likely to arrive on Friday the 18th. This is looking like a stronger storm that could last several days and deliver some really big totals. Another storm is possible without any break continuing the snowfall through the early part of the week. Since this is still 7 - 10 days out, I won't get into too many details. Right now though, this is looking like it has the potential to be one of the bigger storms of the year. Stay tuned.
