Once Again, Storms Are Lined Up in the South Pacific
Summary
We have just started another progressive and active period, with storms coming one after another for the next ten days. In the short term, the heaviest snow will fall in the central and southern regions, with the northern resorts getting in on the action next week.
Short Term Forecast
Another prolonged active period is setting up in the southern hemisphere over South America. There won't be much time, if any, between storms during the next ten days. Look at the storms lined up in the South Pacific below.
You can see the storms bringing several rounds of snow in the next ten days in the GIF below.
Let's get into the details.
Forecast for Monday 8/28
Our first storm is already underway, bringing moderate to heavy snow to the central resorts. This isn't a huge storm, but in the central region we should see 20 - 40 cms above 1500 m with 10 - 20 cms at lower elevations. In the north, expect 7 - 20 cms, with the most at Portillo. This fast moving storm should wrap up Monday evening/night.
Snow totals from the GFS below.
Forecast for Tuesday 8/29 - Friday 9/1
The first part of Tuesday should be mostly dry, before the next storm arrives later in the evening. This is a fairly fast moving storm as well, again favoring the central resorts, with perhaps slightly higher snow totals. We'll go with 25 - 50 cms above 1500 m this round, with 15 - 30 cms below. With a more southerly track than the first storm, I only expect a few cms for the northern resorts. The brunt of the storm will be form Tuesday night through Wednesday, with some lingering snow showers on Thursday and Friday.
Snow totals from the Canadian below.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Saturday 9/2 - Wednesday 9/6
The next round of storms should arrive sometime Saturday night and will likely continue through the middle to end of the week. The first wave looks to last from Saturday through Tuesday, with a second wave arriving Wednesday. We are getting pretty far out in the long range with these details, so expect changes as we get closer. Nevertheless, the models are showing the potential for .5 - 1+ m of snow between Saturday and Wednesday! It just won't stop, and I couldn't be happier about it.
