All Aboard the Storm Train!
Summary
Our first storm moved through on Monday and Tuesday, delivering solid snow totals for the central resorts. The second storm in the series arrived Tuesday night, and will deliver even bigger totals to the central resorts by Thursday. Not much of a break before the third storm keeps the snow going on Thursday afternoon, with a shift of the focus to the northern region.
Short Term Forecast
Let's first take a quick look at the upper level pattern for the next ten days.
Storm after storm barrels through the southern half of South America through the end of the first week of September. Right now, snow levels look to remain below base elevations of the resorts during this period.
Forecast for Wednesday 8/30
Snow began in the southern and central Andes Tuesday night and is still falling this morning. Expect the snow to continue most the day, before tapering to showers in the afternoon/evening, from north to south. Additional accumulations of 10 - 25 cms are possible for the central resorts, on top of the 15 - 30 cms that fell Tuesday night. This storm is taking a southerly track so I don't expect much action for the northern resorts.
Forecast for Thursday 8/31 - Friday 9/1
The next quick hitter will bring moderate to heavy snow back to the central resorts around midday, spreading north through the afternoon. Snow should pick up in the northern zone early Friday morning and continue for most the day. Expect 20 - 40 cms overall, with some higher elevation resorts approaching 50 cms.
Forecast for Saturday 9/2 - Sunday 9/3
There may not be any break before her next wave moves through the northern zone from Saturday to Sunday. The upper level system arrives Friday night and will allow snow to continue. This should delver another 20 - 40 cms above 3000 m and 10 - 20 cms below that for the northern resorts.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Monday 9/4 - Friday 9/8
We'll have another fast moving system impacting the region on Monday and Tuesday, followed by a larger storm Wednesday through Friday. Additional significant accumulations are expected during this time as the pattern stays active. Enjoy the snow.
