Storms for Days

Summary

We have at least four more storms to contend with in this incredibly active period. After today's storm, the attention shifts to the northern resorts for the next week, with lesser amounts for the central and southern regions. This storm has the potential to bring .5 - 1.5 in the north. In the long range, there are even more storms to talk about, but we'll hold off on those details for now.

Short Term Forecast

I feel a bit like a broken record, but let's first take a look at the southeast Pacific where all these storms are lined up.

The general time frame from last post hasn't changed. We have a storm affecting the central resorts primarily that started last night and continues today, Friday. We have another fairly fast moving storm Friday through Sunday, favoring the northern zone. Around Monday, a stronger and longer duration storm brings more snow to the region. And finally, the models have another strong storm starting around Saturday the 9th. Read on for more details about this stormy and busy period.

Forecast for Friday 9/1 - Sunday 9/3

Heavy snow continues this morning for the central resorts, with big totals especially for the high elevation spots in Chile. Expect another 10 - 20 cms on top of what fell last night.

Our next storm, taking a more northerly route, moves in as early as the afternoon, which should kick off some moderate snow for the northern zone. Several cms are possible during they day here, before snow becomes heavy overnight. Expect 15 - 30 cms by morning with heavy snow continuing during the day as well, which should amount to another 10 - 20 cms.

The storm continues to hammer the northern resorts Saturday night, with another 10 - 25 cms piling up. We will see a cold front move through as well, improving the snow quality overnight.

With the higher snow to liquid ratios, expect 10 - 25 cms through the day on Sunday. The snow finally slows down a bit Sunday night, with light to moderate snow expected. Still, the morning report should come in between 5 - 15 cms.

In total, the northern resorts could see 50 - 150 cms during this time, with the biggest totals at Portillo with its high elevation.

I am not expecting much snow for the central and southern zones during this period, just a few cms. Check out the snow from the Canadian model from Friday night through Sunday.

Ok, we made it through the weekend. Do you need some time to catch your breath?

Forecast for Monday 9/4 - Friday 9/8

If you answered yes to the question above, I'm sorry. Our next storm arrives mid-morning for the northern resorts. While the deepest totals will again be found at the northern resorts, the central zone should get in on the action as well. As mentioned, this is a more long duration event, with snow persisting through Thursday and possibly Friday morning. Totals look even bigger with this round of snow, with over 1 m possible in the north and over .5 m in the central zone. I'll have more details on this event on Monday, or maybe even Sunday.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Saturday 9/9 - Wednesday 9/13

For being nearly 10 days out, the major models are in good agreement on another strong storm arriving around the 9th. This storm has the potential to stick around for several days and bring another round of significant snow totals.
