Still No End In Sight for This Stormy Pattern
Summary
At this point, it's hard to keep track of the number of storms that will hit the Andes in the this extended stormy period. Let's just start a new count today. Including today's storm, I have high confidence in at least two more storms before we see any real break in the action. Impressive snow totals will be recorded in the next ten days.
Short Term Forecast
Before we get into the forecast, let's talk a quick look at the southeast Pacific, where you can see our next three storms. The blue colors indicate areas of low pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere, and are associated with cold and stormy weather.
Overall, these storms will be a little warmer, with the second storm in the series bringing some rain/mix to lower elevations.
Forecast for Monday 9/4
Snow returned to the northern resorts last night and will continue for most of today, Monday. Expect another 10 - 25 cms today and this evening before snow tapers a bit, with up to 40 cms at Portillo. Only a few cms are expected for the central resorts.
Forecast for Tuesday 9/5 - Thursday 9/7
As mentioned, the northern resorts may not see any break in the action before their next system arrives early Tuesday morning. A more southerly track will bring heavy snow to both the northern and central resorts this time, but snow levels will be higher. We may see some rain or mix below 1500 m, which will impact the central zone. Temperatures will gradually warm from Monday night to Tuesday night before a cold front lowers snow levels considerably by Wednesday morning.
The heaviest snow will fall during the day on Tuesday in the central zone, and Tuesday night through Wednesday in the north. Wednesday and Thursday should be good powder days, especially Thursday at Portillo and La Parva.
Snow will become more showery in nature for the central zone on Wednesday, but will continue to accumulate. Heavy snow will continue through the day on Wednesday and into Wednesday night in the north.
Check out the snow totals for this period below.
Forecast for Friday 9/8 - Tuesday 9/12
Yet another storm is expected for the weekend, with snow intensifying on Friday. Once again there may not be much, if any, break between storms, with snow showers continuing until the Friday storm moves in. This round of snow will favor the central resorts, but the north should do well also. This is a larger storm as well, with 50 - 100 cms potential in the central zone and 25 - 50 cms in the north. We're still five days out from this one, so those totals may fluctuate bit before then. The heaviest snow will fall from Saturday through Monday, with light snow lingering through Tuesday.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Wednesday 9/13 - Sunday 9/17
We may see a short break before another storm is possible on Thursday. Right now this looks like it will a more southerly track, with limited impacts at most ski resorts. I will keep an eye on this one though, because a little bit of a nudge to the north and we're looking at more significant accumulating snow.
