Three More Storms and Then Finally A Break

Summary

The snow hasn't stopped for many resorts since my last post, and that will continue for the foreseeable future. The system that arrived last night will continue through Friday, with the next major storm arriving Friday night. This will last all weekend and likely through Tuesday, with a potential for a few quiet days to close out the week.

Short Term Forecast

This most recent storm cycle delivered solid totals to the northern resorts, and once again I saw some of the best powder photos of the season.

As mentioned, our latest storm arrived last night, with high snow levels to start. Northern resorts, and higher elevation central resorts like Nevados de Chillan and Corralco should be all snow. This storm will favor the resorts in Chile, with lesser totals in Argentina. Our next storm begins Friday night, and once again there won't be much, if any, break in between.

Forecast for Wednesday 9/6 - Friday 9/8

Snow began last night, and will continue, heavily at times, throughout the day today. Snow levels have fallen, and precipitation should be all snow now. The heaviest snow will shift from the central zone to the northern zone, though moderate snow will continue for Corralco, Pucon, Las Araucarias, and Volcan Osorno. Expect 8 - 16 cms for the central resorts, with 20 - 40 cms in the north at Portillo, La Parva, Las Lenas, and even Nevados de Chillan.

Snow levels will be dropping during the day in the north. Strong winds are possible in the central zone, especially later in the day and overnight as well. Snow continues Wednesday night, with another 6 - 12 cms in the north and 8 - 16 cms for the central resorts. The storm will linger on Thursday as well, with additional moderate accumulations. A trailing wave on Friday will bring another period of moderate to heavy snow in the north. Expect another 8 - 16 cms during the day here, with minor accumulations in the central zone.

Forecast for Saturday 9/9 - Tuesday 9/12

Another major long-duration storm moves in Friday night, with several days of heavy snow possible. This storm will bring heavy snow through Monday, before tapering to snow showers on Tuesday. Similar to our current storm, snow levels will start out a bit high, but should come down by Saturday morning. Lower elevation central resorts are looking at 35 - 70 cms, with 50 - 100 + cms at Corralco and Nevados Chillan. Expect 40 - 100 cms in the northern zone with perhaps more at Portillo.

I will refine these totals in Friday's update.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Wednesday 9/13 - Sunday 9/17

We may finally see a break toward the latter of next week, with the models showing a ridge developing over the region. However, this does not appear to remain in place for too long, with another storm possibly around the 14th/15th.
