Still Storming in the Andes

Summary

Friday will feature light to moderate snowfall on the tail end of one storm, before the next round of snow arrives overnight. This weekend storm will be a bit on the warm side, especially through Sunday before the cold front arrives. Snow lingers into early next week and then we should see things calm down for at least a few days. Another storm is possible next weekend.

Short Term Forecast

Conditions have been great the last few days, with quality powder days across the region. Check out this shot from El Colorado.

Forecast for Friday 9/8 - Tuesday 9/12

Moderate snow in the north and light snow in the central zones will continue throughout the day, with some modest accumulations. We may see a short break in the evening before snow becomes returns overnight in the northern and central zones. We will see some pretty impressive totals out of this storm, but will also be dealing with some higher snow levels.

As the storm moves in, we'll generally have a warming trend from Friday night through midday Sunday. Below, you can see warm air advancing south through Sunday, before the cold front brings colder air north.

So, we'll see snow levels between 1500 m to 1700 m in the central zone, and between 2200 m to 2600 m in the north, through Sunday. Temperatures will fall throughout the day on Sunday and snow levels will drop below all base elevations by Monday.

Meanwhile, snow will be falling throughout this time, with some rain mixing in at lower elevations. Still, accumulations will be significant at upper elevations. Overall, expect 5 - 15 cms Friday night, with heavier snow arriving Saturday. In the north, we should see 10 - 20 cms (up to 30 cms at Portillo), but higher elevations in central zone will really get hammered during this time with 25 - 50 cms possible at Corralco and Nevados de Chillan. With high snow levels though, < 10 cms are expected at the middle and lower elevations other resorts in the region.

Moderate to heavy snow continues Saturday night as well, with 8 - 16 cms at upper elevations in the central zone and 10 - 20 cms (up to 30 cms at Portillo) in the north. Snow continues on Sunday, with another 5 - 10 cms in the north, but up to 25 cms at Portillo and Las Lenas. Again, the higher elevation resorts in the central zone, Corralco and Nevados de Chillan, will see another 15 - 25 cms.

On Sunday night, cooler air will have arrived and heavy snow will continue. Monday should be the best day in the series, with better quality snow. Another 25 - 50 cms overnight in the north and higher elevation central resorts, while the lower elevation resorts in the central zone have cooled off and should see 15 - 30 cms.

Moderate to heavy snow continues on Monday as well, with 8 - 16 cms, highest a bit farther south in the central zone, where 12 - 25 cms are possible. Finally, light snow lingers through Monday night and Tuesday, with a few cms expected during each of these periods.

Check out the snow map below for this period.

Forecast for Wednesday 9/13 - Thursday 9/14

Relatively speaking, Wednesday and Thursday of next week look quiet. There may be some snow showers as a system passes by to the south, but nothing too exciting at this time.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Friday 9/15 - Tuesday 9/19

Well, there's pretty good model agreement on another major storm arriving around Friday the 15th and lasting for several days. This system looks fairly cold and fairly deep. I will be keeping an eye on this one and will update further in the next post.
