Moderate Mid Week Storm, Light Snow Possible Next Weekend

Summary

The season is winding down in South America, but there are a few weeks left and still some chances for powder. Smaller storms are likely during this time with warmer temperatures, but overall conditions remain good.

Short Term Forecast

Not much has changed in the forecast, with a moderate storm still on tap mid-week for the central zone. The northern mountains won't see much with limited impacts in the southern zone as well.

Forecast for Monday 9/25 - Thursday 9/28

The work week starts off quietly ahead of the next storm system. A very weak storm may bring some flurries to the northern zone on Monday, before a more southerly racking storm arrives Tuesday night. This storm will be out the door by Thursday evening. The heaviest snow for most will be Wednesday night, leaving Thursday as the best pow day. I expect 8 - 16 cms overnight, and 15 - 30 cms total for the Chilean resorts in the central zone.

The dynamics of this storm do not favor much precipitation extending to the resorts in Argentina, so totals there will be much lower, generally < 10 cms.

Storm totals from the Canadian model are below.

Forecast for Friday 9/29 - Saturday 9/30

We should have another break in the action from Friday through Saturday, with a warming trend.

Forecast for Sunday 10/1 - Tuesday 10/3

More storms are possible to start the month of October. Right now, the models are not handling this period well, with differences in timing and track. This next series of storms should last through Monday or Tuesday, with only modest accumulations expected.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Wednesday 10/4 - Sunday 10/8

The long-range models keep things active through the end of the first week of October. There is potential here for a stronger storm with enough cold air for significant totals. It's too early to provide any more details than that. I will keep an eye on this period and keep you up to date on any developments.
