Light Snow Continues, Larger Storm Possible Next Week

Summary

Spotty snow showers continue today (Friday) and through the weekend. Snow showers become a bit more widespread and heavier for the early part of next week, with a narrow band of heavy snow possible toward the middle of the week. Thing should quiet down for the last few days of the month before another system is possible at the beginning of October.

Short Term Forecast

Before we get into the forecast, let's check out a few shots from across the region. The snow pack remans healthy from the late season surge of snow storms.

Forecast for Friday 9/22 - Tuesday 9/26

Weak systems will continue to impact primarily the central zone from this weekend though early next week. I am not expecting more than 10 cms on the high end during any twelve hour period. Resorts like Corralco, Pucon, Antillanca, and Volcan Osorno should do best during this period, with totals between 10 - 20 cms by the end of the day on Tuesday.

Forecast for Wednesday 9/27 - Thursday 9/28

The next storm arrives as early as Tuesday night, and will take a southerly track across the southern Andes. Resorts in the southern half of the central region, like Antillanca, Volcan Osorno, and Pucon should do best with the southerly track. Snow levels should start around 1200 m, just below most of the resort bases in this region, and drop to 900 m by Thursday morning.

These resorts could se 15 - 30 cms during this time, with totals dropping off considerably as you move north.

Check out the snow map below.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Friday 9/29 - Tuesday 10/3

After a few days of calm weather, the models are hinting at a strong storm arriving around October 1st. Resorts will be closing for the season between now and then, with limited options at that time. As I mentioned last post, Valle Nevado will stay open through 10/8, Portillo until 10/1, and Cerro Catedral until 10/15. If I learn any more details about closing dates I will let you know.
