Wintry Tuesday Morning, But Spring Returns Quickly Wednesday...

Summary

- Snow showers Tuesday morning with a final coating to an inch possible. Clearing during the afternoon with highs into the 40's. Ridgetop wind gusts of 50 mph in the morning lowering to 35+ mph. - High pressure builds in through the end of the week. Sunny skies with temperatures warming into the 50's on the mountains, and 60's at lake level. - A weak system could bring a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday. Snow levels above 8,000 feet. Sunday high pressure builds back in with dry weather into next week. Temperatures cool back into the 50's for the weekend. - A weak system could bring scattered rain showers next Wednesday. Then we should rebound back to dry and mild weather through the rest of the week.

Short Term Forecast

The storm performed exactly as expected.  We were expecting 1-6 inches of snow from east to west across the Tahoe basin, and the ski resorts are reporting 1-5 inches this morning.  It's a wintry morning with snow showers still falling.  Let's take a look at the webcams from some of the ski resorts along the crest from north to south.

It's nice to see the mountains blanketed in white one last time this season.  Here is a look at the reports and totals for the season.

I almost went out with a bang with a perfect forecast scorecard for this storm.  Here is the final keep me honest report of the season.

variance report

This morning a final round of snow showers are moving through.  That could drop a quick coating to an inch of snow on the mountains.

Game Over:

High pressure begins to build in Tuesday afternoon with clearing skies and highs into the 40's.  So get on the snow early this morning before it becomes sticky.  Spring quickly returns Wednesday with highs into the 50's, and even the 60's at lake level Thursday and Friday!

A weak system could bring a few rain showers Saturday and temperatures cool a few degrees.  Snow levels start around 10,000 feet and lower to around 8,000 feet through the day.  The sun returns Sunday into Tuesday with temperatures in the 50's.

The majority of the ski resorts close this weekend, so this is the last storm of the season for them.  Winter tried to hang on right to the end.

Extended Forecast

Another weak system could bring a few rain showers next Wednesday but it has been trending north.

Overall, we look to be going into a typical Spring pattern.  Most storms will stay to our north with a mainly drier pattern going forward.  Any storms that brush us will likely have high snow levels and bring rain showers.  It is possible to see a stronger system dig in late in the season in May and bring a quick shot of measurable snow.  I'll be keeping an eye on that and will let you know if I see anything.

Until then the posts will be less consistent with the ski resorts closing and storms winding down.  I'll have some monthly and season recap posts with all the stats so stay tuned for those.

Thank you all for a great season.  I think I had the most fun yet forecasting this season.  It was one to remember.  Lots of cold powder days in February.  Thanks for following along and having fun chasing storms with us!

Stay tuned...BA

P.S.  As we turn our focus towards hiking season and our OpenSummit hiking weather app, I have been planning this summer's family hiking tour.  Some of you followed along last year as we traveled the country visiting 24 national parks.  We have 10 on the schedule this Summer in CO & UT and more in the fall, with Tahoe hiking in the middle.  I'll be posting about our adventures again this summer here on the blog, as well as posting insights on the upcoming 19/20 season.
