Short Term Forecast

Monday Storm:

You can see the next storm moving into northern CA this morning on satellite.  Winds are gusting up to 70+ mph on the mountain tops as the storm approaches.

sat

Rain & snow showers will push in Monday afternoon.  Snow levels starting around 7,500 feet and then falling to around 6,500 feet by Monday evening.  The storm has been slowing slightly on the latest model runs.  The heaviest precipitation is expected during Monday evening and then snow showers possible behind the front through Tuesday night.  Snow levels falling to around 5,500 feet.

Total precipitation amounts have trended down again slightly this morning.  The total model average is 0.5 inches of total precipitation possible along the crest and lesser amounts east across the lake.  The GFS and Canadian models have trended down to only 3 tenths of an inch of precip near the crest.

gfs

The European model has up to 6 tenths and the WPC's model has up to an inch.

wpc

That's a bigger spread than we were seeing yesterday and a big spread for a storm that is currently pushing in.  The WPC model would bring a high end of up to 10 inches near the crest.  Here is the updated and final snowfall forecast using the total model average.  The best chance for snow accumulations in the lower elevations will be on colder surfaces.

forecast

If this storm comes through and delivers several inches on the mountains, Tuesday morning could be the last fresh tracks day at most ski resorts as the majority close next weekend.  The Calendar is below.

Extended Forecast

We should clear out on Tuesday with winds coming down and temperatures warming into the 40's on the mountains and 50's at lake level.  High pressure builds in through the end of the week with sun and warming temperatures.  We could be in the 50's on the mountains Wednesday through Friday, and 60's at lake level!

A weak system Saturday could bring us some scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.  Temperatures remain mild in the 50's, and snow levels are above 8,000 feet.

The long-range models build high-pressure over CA going into the last week of April.  A few model runs suggest another weak system could sneak in with some rain showers around the 23rd.  But overall expecting a mainly drier pattern with no more chances for measurable snow for now.

Stay tuned...BA
