Typical Beautiful (boring) Summer Weather Continues...

Update

The Weather:

They say that people move to Tahoe for the winters but stay for the summers.  That is because the weather is typically tranquil and temperatures much cooler than surrounding areas during the summer.  It makes for almost daily great weather for hiking and swimming, but if you enjoy active weather as I do it becomes quite boring.

We haven't seen much in the way of above-average temperatures or thunderstorms yet this summer.  Big fires either (knock on wood).  I've been watching the sky today hoping the clouds forming will turn into full-on thunderstorms with heavy rain and lighting.  Something different...  The best chance for thunderstorms for Thursday seems to be on the south and east side for the lake.  Then possibly a better chance for thunderstorms farther north on Friday.

The forecast models are seeing this in their precipitation forecasts.

Over the weekend high pressure will build over CA.  That should bring drier and warmer weather.  High temperatures at the lake should easily be in the 80's.  90's for Reno where they have yet to hit 100 degrees yet this summer.  Last summer they set a record for 100 degree days.

The heat may be short-lived as another trough digs in towards the Pacific NW by Tuesday and the ridge shifts a bit east.

We may cool down to highs in the 70's at the lake by the middle of next week.

Typical afternoon winds from the w/sw on the lake through the period.  Gusts look to be around 15-20 mph through Sunday.  Stronger breezes possible next week with gusts up to 30 mph in the afternoon.

The Upcoming Season:

The only thing we are really learning for certain right now is which ski resorts will be included on the season passes.  It's nearly impossible to forecast anything for next Winter at this point.  The first long-term pattern that will start to emerge going later into the summer will be the sea surface temperatures.

Some forecast models are suggesting we could switch to a La Nina pattern this Winter.

We will be watching that and adding in more ingredients as we go into the Fall.

I hope you are all getting out in the mountains and enjoying Summer.  I'll be camping north of Truckee this weekend and hopefully doing some swimming in the lakes as well.

Stay tuned...BA
