September Recap:
October may end up being near average temperatures and dry, but September was definitely a cold and wet month. By September standards.
Truckee recorded temperatures at 3 degrees below average for the month. The Tahoe Basin recorded total precipitation of 145% of average for the month. September is the final month in the water year which ended at 129% of average!
For snowfall, the Snow Lab recorded 5 inches of snow. That ties for the 3rd snowiest September of the last 50 years.
That actually boosted the 50-year average from 1 inch to 2 inches for September. September also ends the snowfall season for the Central Sierra Snow Lab. Here is the 140-year snowfall chart updated through 2019.
The 140-year average is 407 inches of snow. But what I have noticed over the years is that the snowfall average is less in recent decades. So I made a chart showing the snowfall average as it has changed decade by decade.
What I thought is interesting is that the biggest 10-year drop was during the 1980s. The average snowfall hasn't changed much over the last 20-30 years.
I'll have more thoughts on the pattern for the upcoming season in Monday's post.
