We are into the typical boring summer weather pattern where the weather is pretty much the same every day. We have another week ahead of sunny skies and highs in the 80s at lake level. 60s & 70s for the upper elevations.
We have the typical afternoon wind pattern with gusty winds picking up for several hours and subsiding at night. The strongest winds could be Sunday with afternoon ridge gusts to 40+ mph.
There is a chance that we could see some afternoon thunderstorms towards the end of the week if some monsoonal moisture works its way north up the Sierra. Other than that, boring weather perfect for enjoying all the outdoor activities.
One of those activities is hiking. I've been trying to get out on some hikes this summer around the lake. Here is a shot I took the other day on a hike near my favorite secret spot.
During the last few summers we have headed out into the rest of the country to explore National Parks. This summer with the virus we have not done much traveling away from our local mountains. Last we checked in during the fall we had been to Hawaii to visit parks number 43 & 44 as we check National Parks off of our list.
We were able to head south in January during the snowless month we had here in Tahoe to visit 3 southern CA parks. Ironically some of the closest to us and we saved them for parks 45-47. Here are a couple shots from our trip to Pinnacles National Park where we hiked around and explored the cool rock formations and caves.
It's not just all fun and games. We have been working really hard this summer to develop lots of new features for tracking mountain weather. Over the last few posts I have shown you the new radar, satellite, temperature, and snow cover maps we have added to the OpenSummit app and website.
This past week we added air and surface smoke maps! I was able to use it right away to track the smoke this past week from the Numbers Fire southeast of the lake.
We plan to launch animated smoke maps over the next 2 weeks. We continue to work hard on new features, some of which we will be able to integrate into OpenSnow for the upcoming season. August is usually the month we switch gears towards OpenSnow and the upcoming winter season. I can't believe it's almost August and time to focus on snow again!
Stay tuned for more exciting news as we have some interesting things working in the pipeline. I hope you are all enjoying the summer as best as you can. Good thing that most summer mountain activities are outside in the remote mountain air.
