Thursday

It's opening day!

On Thursday morning, the storm has ended, the skies are clearing, and the temperature will start the day in the single digits with a high in the teens.

As a recap, snow from Monday night to Wednesday afternoon totaled 10 inches, with 3-4 inches falling on Wednesday during the day. This total was well below the 18-24 inches that I expected, and I think Telluride was just in an unlucky spot with warm temperatures, just south of the storm energy, and a non-ideal wind direction. If any of those factors changed just a bit, we could have nearly doubled the snow total. Bah!

The Next 10+ Days

The atmosphere often balances things out, so I'm not all that surprised that a snowy start to the season (snowpack is 187% of the median) will be followed by a stretch of dry weather.

Friday will warm into the mid-20s, and then Saturday and Sunday will warm into the mid-30s.

From Monday through about December 10th, the weather should mostly be dry and sunny with high temperatures in the 30s.

During these first ten days of December, the east coast of the United States will experience cold and stormy weather while Colorado will be on the western edge of the storm track. We may see a few times of clouds, flurries, and cooler temperatures if/when storms sideswipe us on their way to the east.

The good news is that we have a solid base, the low sun angle of early December will help to preserve our snowpack, and more terrain should open over the coming days and weeks.

The longer-range forecasts have decent odds of some flakes returning around December 10th (ish), and the very long-range forecasts hint that the final 10-20 days of December will have higher odds of snowfall compared to the first ten days of the month, so we've got that going for us:-)
