No ice and warm weather on the way

Summary

The major ice storm crossing the midwest to start this week will miss MN & WI for the most part. Then warm weather takes over for the rest of the week.

Short Term Forecast

The major weather headlines right now have been for the ice storm moving through the Midwest right now. Luckily for those of us further north, the models have been trending towards this cutoff low pressure system missing most of Minnesota and effecting only southeastern Wisconsin. Since the precipitation area won’t be too large, right now it looks that places south of I-94 will have the best chance of a slight coat of ice and a dusting of snow. Further north, temperatures will correct a bit lower from today, but there looks to be nothing more than a glaze of ice from any extra moisture in the air.

Different precip type totals through Tuesday night.

After the storm moves off to the east on Tuesday morning, warmer high pressure, not the arctic variety, will dominate our weather for the rest of the week. Most everyone should see temperatures easily into the upper 30s by Wednesday and maybe even 40s by Thursday under mostly clear skies. Will very little ice accumulation, it should soften up the snow and make for some great skiing during the week if you can get out there.

Extended Forecast

Looking ahead toward the end of the week and weekend, the models are all over the place. Additionally with the shift of the short term forecast in the past few model runs, I would not be too surprised to see some shifting in the long term too. Even more so than the past couple of weeks. Right now both models have hinted at a clipper system moving through on Saturday, but the past model runs have widely varied in path and strength. So with that being said, going to wait until later this week to really dig into the forecast for next weekend.
