Canada scores early week powder, midweek storm for the Northeast

Summary

A storm early this week delivered the goods to Canada with late-season powder days for many areas. Attention shifts to the East during the middle part of this week, where a storm will bring moderate to heavy snow to portions of New York and Vermont as snow levels lower behind a strong cold front. The end of the week will be quiet for most regions, then the West turns more active next week.

Short Term Forecast

Early Week Snow for British Columbia and Alberta

A storm on Sunday and Monday resulted in late season powder for Canadian ski resorts. Castle Mountain, Banff Sunshine, Marmot Basin, Fernie, Kicking Horse, Panorama, and Whistler picked up 26-52 cm (10-20 inches) from this storm. South of the border, Mt. Baker and Stevens Pass also received deep totals.

Check out the scene from Marmot Basin on Monday:

Forecast for Wed, Mar 31 – Thu, Apr 1

A storm will impact the East with rain on Wednesday turning to snow on Wednesday night and Thursday as a strong cold front arrives. New York, Quebec, and possibly Vermont will be favored for the deepest totals, while farther east, New Hampshire and Maine look to be in the warm sector with mostly rain. In the West, a storm will bring heavy snow to Southeast Alaska and Northwest British Columbia on Wednesday and Thursday.

Forecast for Fri, Apr 2 – Sat, Apr 3

Lingering flurries from the previous storm will taper off in the Northeast on Friday morning. The pattern will remain unsettled in Western Canada with snow showers for British Columbia and Alberta on Friday and Saturday, while Northwest BC will be favored for heavier amounts once again.

Forecast for Sun, Apr 4 – Mon, Apr 5

A quiet pattern will remain in place across most of North America. Snow shower activity will continue across British Columbia and Alberta, while a weaker storm will also impact the Northeast with a combination of rain and snow showers.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue, Apr 6 – Sat, Apr 10

The pattern will turn more active across the West during this time with the storm track favoring the Sierras, Cascades, Coast Range, and Northern Rockies.

Thanks so much for reading! Check back for my next post on Friday, April 2nd.
