Areas east of the Continental Divide favored this week

Summary

The next 5 days will be relatively quiet with a lack of significant storms for most of North America, except for Alaska which will continue to be hit with heavy snow (but with high snow levels for Alyeska and Eaglecrest). Elsewhere, the eastern slopes of the Rockies, the Upper Midwest, and the East will be the most favored for new snow. Next week, the pattern will turn more active out West.

Short Term Forecast

Light to moderate snow for the Eastern Rockies, Great Lakes, and Northeast this week

The pattern over the next several days will feature colder temps east of the Continental Divide along with a few shots of snow. Along the eastern slopes of the Rockies, Red Lodge, Montana is forecasted to see the heaviest snow while areas near the Divide in Colorado should also pick up a few inches.

Upper Midwest ski resorts will continue to experience excellent conditions with lake effect snow falling this week and Eastern areas from West Virginia to Vermont could pick up several inches or more over the next 5 days as well.

Forecast for Mon 1/24 – Tue 1/25:

A storm sliding down the Continental Divide will bring light to moderate snow to areas along and east of the Divide in Alberta and Montana on Monday, and Wyoming and Colorado on Tuesday. A weak storm will also move across the Midwest and East on Monday and Tuesday with snow showers expected, favoring lake effect regions as well as West Virginia. Southeast Alaska will see another round of heavy snow on Monday night and Tuesday.

Forecast for Wed 1/26 – Thu 1/27:

Lingering snow showers can be expected across the Northeast early on Wednesday, then the next storm will bring another round of snow to the Upper Midwest on Thursday. Alaska will see a relative break on Wednesday followed by another storm on Thursday. Another weak disturbance along the eastern slopes of the Continental Divide could potentially bring some light flurries on Wednesday-Thursday, but confidence is low.

Forecast for Fri 1/28 – Sat 1/29:

A storm will bring a round of light to moderate snow to much of the East on Friday and Saturday, while an area low pressure strengthening just off the northeast coast could bring heavy snow to mountain areas in New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

The pattern will begin to change across the West with a storm bringing heavy snow to Southeast Alaska and Northwest BC, while Southern BC and the Northwest U.S. could see a leading-edge weak storm with light snow on Saturday followed by better snow potential next week...

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun 1/30 – Thu 2/3:

The pattern will finally start to turn more active across the West next week with the Northwest and Northern Rockies looking like the most favored regions, though the Sierra and Central Rockies should get in on the action as well. The pattern will also remain active across the Northeast and Upper Midwest, though temperatures will start to moderate after a cold past couple of weeks.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (1/26).
