Keeping an eye on a Nor'easter for this weekend
Summary
The big story during the second half of this week will be a powerful Nor'eastern developing in the Atlantic that is now expected to track close enough to the coastline to bring heavy snow to some areas – though just how far inland the heavy snow makes it remains in question. Aside from that, a storm will move into the Pacific NW on Sunday with a round of snow for the Rockies early next week.
Short Term Forecast
Heavy snow possible for some New England ski resorts this weekend
A Nor'easter will develop near the Atlantic Coast on Friday and Saturday, and New England ski resorts will at least have a chance of picking up some moderate to heavy snow depending on how far east or west the center of the storm tracks.
Southern New England will have the best chance of seeing deep snow totals, while Northern New England could see anything ranging from heavy snow to light flurries.
This will certainly be one to watch in the days to follow, so be sure to check in with the New England Daily Snow for the latest updates.
Forecast for Wed 1/26 – Thu 1/27:
The mid-week pattern will be relatively quiet with some light snow showers across the Great Lakes region on Wednesday and Thursday, along with lingering snow for Northern New Mexico early on Wednesday morning. The Eastern slopes of the Continental Divide could also see some flurries on Thursday. Further north, Alaska will see its next round of snow arrive on Thursday afternoon.
Forecast for Fri 1/29 – Sat 1/30:
The Nor'easter will develop off the Atlantic Coast on Friday with light to moderate snow expected across the Mid-Atlantic on Friday night followed by the potential for heavy snow across New England on Saturday. The snowfall projection shown below is just one possibility, and some models are projecting heavy snow to reach areas further inland across New England.
A strong storm will also impact Alaska and Northwest BC on Friday and Saturday with snow extending into Southwest BC by Saturday afternoon.
Forecast for Sun 1/30 – Mon 1/31:
Lingering snow across New England and Southeast Canada on Sunday morning will give way to a drying trend on Sunday night and Monday. Heavy snow is also expected across Southwest BC and Washington on Sunday with light snow spreading into the Northern Rockies on Sunday night and Monday as the storm moves inland.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Tue 2/1 – Sat 2/5:
The early February pattern for the West is trending drier/less snowy than previously expected with only a temporary period of active weather now expected. A weak to moderate storm will bring snow to parts of the Rockies on Tuesday and Wednesday before high pressure attempts to make a comeback with the storm track shifting northward into British Columbia in the days to follow. The East will also see a break from its cold pattern with a significant warm-up expected.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (1/28).
