Snow returns to parts of the West this week

Summary

Areas across the Pacific Northwest, Western Canada, and far Northern U.S. Rockies will wake up to a powder day on Monday as a strong storm impacts the region. A storm will also bring moderate to heavy snow to Southern Colorado & Northern New Mexico from Tuesday night to Wednesday. The East will see a storm on Thursday-Friday but it will be a messy setup with mixed precipitation.

Short Term Forecast

Snow for parts of the West this week

Western Canada, the Pacific Northwest, and Northern Idaho/Montana will be the most favored regions during the upcoming week with a strong storm on Monday followed by several shots of lighter snow from Tuesday through Friday. Colder air arriving will result in low snow levels and good snow conditions.

Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico will also see a nice shot of snow with ski areas in this region in line for a Wednesday powder day.

Forecast for Mon 1/31 – Tue 2/1:

A strong storm will bring heavy snow to the Northwest on Monday followed by lighter snow showers and flurries on Tuesday. The East will see a break after the weekend Nor'easter aside from some occasional flurries.

Forecast for Wed 2/2 – Thu 2/3:

A storm will impact Colorado and New Mexico on Tuesday night and Wednesday with moderate to heavy snow for the San Juan and Sangre de Christo Ranges. A strong storm will bring heavy snow to SE Alaska & Northern BC on Wednesday-Wednesday night, while Southern BC and the Northwest U.S. will see much lighter snow from this storm.

A strong storm will impact the East starting on Wednesday, but warmer air arriving will result in a mix of snow, rain, and ice with considerable uncertainty if any areas (i.e. Northern New England & Quebec) will remain all-snow or not.

Forecast for Fri 2/4 – Sat 2/5:

Another storm will impact the Northwest on Friday with heavy snow for Northern BC, moderate snow for Southern BC, and light snow extending south of the U.S. border into Washington and Northern Idaho/Montana.

Mixed precipitation will continue across the East on Friday with uncertainty regarding the cutoff between snow and rain/ice, though areas near the U.S.-Canada border could potentially see some good snow totals. The Upper Midwest could also see a round of snow arrive on Saturday.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun 2/6 – Thu 2/10:

A relatively quiet pattern is expected next week with a ridge of high-pressure strengthening over the Western U.S. once again, and the main storm track shifting northward into Northern and Central BC. The East will remain in a colder pattern but conditions may also end up on the drier side with Northern New England and Quebec being the most favored for light snow.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (2/2).
