Quiet weekend for most of North America

Summary

Most areas will see a relatively quiet pattern this weekend, except for Alaska who will continue to get hit with strong storms and heavy snow. The Great Lakes will see a nice storm on Friday, which will provide a refresh after picking up snow earlier this week. Two storms will also bring light to moderate snow to most of the West next week.

Short Term Forecast

Recent snow totals across North America

The past week has been fairly quiet for most areas, with Alaska being the most noticeable exception. New England also saw good snow this week with 14 inches over the past 5 days at Saddleback in Maine. Elsewhere, the Upper Midwest, Canadian Rockies, and eastern portions of the Rockies received light to moderate snow this week.

Forecast for Fri 2/11 – Sat 2/12:

A storm will bring snow to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region on Friday before weakening further east with only some light snow showers across Northern New England. A storm will also bring snow to the eastern slopes of the Continental Divide from Alberta to New Mexico on Friday. Alaska will see another round of heavy snow on Friday and Saturday.

Forecast for Sun 2/13 – Mon 2/14:

A storm will develop over the Mid-Atlantic on Sunday with light to moderate snow favoring Virginia. The Upper Midwest will continue to see generally light snow showers/flurries on Sunday and Monday. A weak storm will move into the Pacific Northwest on Monday with light to moderate snow for BC, Washington, and Oregon.

Forecast for Tue 2/15 – Wed 2/16:

A storm will drop into California with moderate snow developing from Tahoe to SoCal on Tuesday with light snow elsewhere across the Great Basin/Southern Rockies. A storm will then drop in from the northwest on Tuesday night and Wednesday with snow light to moderate snow developing across most ski regions in the Rockies.

The Great Lakes region and parts of New England could see some flurries, but overall a quiet pattern is expected for the East.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu 2/17 – Mon 2/21:

Colorado and New Mexico will likely see some lingering snow from the mid-week storm on Thursday before drying out in the days to follow. The storm track for the rest of this period will favor British Columbia, while the Northwest U.S. could also get in on the action later in the period.

A storm is also possible for the East around the 17th-18th, but warmer air could result in rain issues as far north as New England, while the Great Lakes and Southeast Canada will see better chances of snow.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Monday (2/14).
