Healthy Snow Totals Ahead For The Northwest & Rockies
Summary
New England received 1-2 feet over this past weekend. Our attention will now turn back to the Pacific Northwest as an atmospheric river targets British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon on Monday and Tuesday. The Rockies will receive another good dose of snowfall on Wednesday and Thursday. The Pacific Northwest will then remain in the flow with more heavy snow over the weekend of March 19/20.
Short Term Forecast
March Madness
The month of March has brought a welcome return to winter for many areas.
Over the past 5 days, healthy snow totals have been recorded throughout the Rockies and throughout the Northeast, specifically in the Green Mountains of Vermont where Jay Peak picked up 22 inches for Sunday (3/13) morning's report.
Throughout the Rockies, Utah and Colorado have been back in the flow with multiple waves of fresh snow. Alta has picked up 24 inches over the past 5 days, while Snowmass in Colorado has received 25 inches as of Monday morning.
Forecast for Mon 3/14 – Tues 3/15:
An atmospheric river event is already underway in the Pacific Northwest and it will continue to bring healthy totals to British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, and down into Oregon, albeit with higher snow levels. It will be fairly quiet elsewhere across North America as storms line up for the middle and second half of the week.
Forecast for Wed 3/16 – Thurs 3/17:
Colorado will then be the focus as we look ahead to the middle of the week. The details are still coming together but healthy totals could be in-store for Thursday, March 17 as the storm strengthens over Colorado and likely targets areas east of the divide for the deepest totals.
Forecast for Fri 3/18 – Sat 3/19:
Looking further ahead to the end of the week and into next weekend, our main focus will once again turn to the Pacific Northwest and further down into the West Coast for light snow. Areas in the Upper Midwest could also receive a fresh coast of white so keep an eye on the Midwest Daily Snow for the latest details.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Sun 3/20 – Thurs 3/24:
An active pattern will continue to favor the Pacific Northwest during the week of March 20, along with another good-looking storm for Colorado on Monday, March 21 and into Tuesday, March 22.
If you're chasing fresh tracks during the second half of March, keep an eye on the Pacific Northwest and up into British Columbia as below-average temps and consistent snowfall should make for mighty fine conditions.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (3/16).
