Snowy pattern set to return across the West

Summary

The PNW and BC picked up new snow on Tuesday following a long dry spell, and snow will fall across the Rockies on Wednesday. A break will occur over Thanksgiving, then a more active pattern will take hold this weekend and for most of next week with all major ski regions out West on track for fresh snow. New England will see additional shots of snow, but rain will be a factor at times.

Short Term Forecast

Active storm track takes hold over the next 10 Days

The recent dry spell that has taken hold across the West is finally showing signs of relenting. A nice teaser storm will bring snow to many areas on Wednesday, followed by a brief break over Thanksgiving. An active pattern will then set up across the West starting this weekend and continuing into early December with frequent storms expected.

The map below is a snowfall projection for the next 10 days with the primary storm tracks indicated by blue arrows. In addition to the West, New England and Southeast Canada will see relatively frequent shots of snow (and rain) as well.

Forecast for Wed 11/23 – Thu 11/24:

Snow will fall across the Northern & Central Rockies on Wednesday while a weak disturbance also brings some light snow showers to Upstate New York and New England on Wednesday. Thanksgiving Day on Thursday is looking dry for most ski regions in the Lower 48, but a storm will impact West Central & Northwest BC along with Southeast Alaska.

Forecast for Fri 11/25 – Sat 11/26:

On Friday, a storm originating in Northern BC will work its way southward and gradually weaken as it does so, bringing moderate to locally heavy snow to Southern BC and Northern Washington, while the Idaho Panhandle will see some light snow on Saturday.

A storm will also impact the East on Friday, but warmer air working its way into the area will result in a mix of snow and rain across New England, while the Central and Southern Appalachians will receive all-rain.

Forecast for Sun 11/27 – Mon 11/28:

The west will turn more active during this period as a series of stronger storms arrives, resulting in moderate to heavy snow across the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. Another storm will impact the East with rain expected on Sunday, before possibly changing over to snow showers on the backside of the storm on Monday across the higher terrain from New England to PA/WV.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue 11/29 – Sat 12/3:

An active pattern will continue across the West throughout this period along with below-average temperatures. A southwest flow-dominated storm track is expected, with the Sierra, Wasatch, and Central/Northern Rockies looking like the most favored areas. Northern New England will be favored to see additional shots of snow as well, though rain could also be a factor at times.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (11/25).
