Keeping an eye on the Northwest and New England

Summary

The storm track this week will favor Canada and far northern portions of the U.S. On Tuesday, a storm will bring heavy snow to BC, with light/moderate snow extending into northern portions of WA & ID. An East Coast storm is likely Fri-Sat with snow possible for New England. Another storm will impact the PNW this weekend, with a more favorable pattern for the West as a whole expected next week.

Short Term Forecast

7-Day Snow Outlook

If you're looking for fresh snow this week, you'll want to head north. British Columbia and far northern portions of the Western U.S. will see a storm on Tuesday-Wednesday and again on Saturday-Sunday. A storm will also impact the East Coast on Friday and Saturday with Northern New England possibly picking up some good snow, though questions exist on the storm track and where (or if) rain will be a factor.

Here is a 7-day snowfall outlook, taking the average of multiple weather model simulations:

Forecast for Mon 11/21 – Tue 11/22:

A storm will bring heavy snow to British Columbia during this period, with the major ski regions of Southern BC seeing most of its action on Tuesday. The Northern Washington Cascades will receive snow on Tuesday as well. Across the East, a weak disturbance will bring a round of snow showers to Quebec and New England on Monday night/Tuesday morning.

Forecast for Wed 11/23 – Thu 11/24:

Snow will fall across northern portions of Washington, Idaho, and Northwest Montana on Tuesday night and Wednesday but the storm will fizzle out as it moves inland with little to no snow for the Central Rockies. Another storm will take aim at West Central and Northwest BC on Wednesday-Thursday with heavy/wet snow and fairly high snow levels.

Forecast for Fri 11/25 – Sat 11/26:

A storm will impact the East on Friday-Saturday with rain for the central/southern Appalachians, while snow is a decent possibility for parts of New England and Upstate New York. However, significant uncertainty exists on the exact storm track, which will influence precipitation type (will rain be a factor?) and snow totals. This particular model is higher than the others on snowfall right now, so don't take it literally.

Out West, the pattern will also start to turn more active with a storm moving into the Northwest on Saturday.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Sun 11/27 – Thu 12/1:

Confidence is growing that a more active pattern will develop out West during this period. The pattern looks most favorable for the Northwest and Northern Rockies, but the Sierra and Central Rockies will likely see some action as well.

Across the East, additional shots of snow are possible across New England early in this period, followed by a trend toward milder temperatures and possibly rain.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Wednesday (11/23).
