California remains in the flow for the foreseeable future

Summary

A strong and persistent jet stream will continue to favor strong storms slamming into California and depositing huge amounts of snow over the Sierra Nevada Range. The rest of the West will see lighter but continued frequent snowfall through the weekend, while a stronger storm could impact the Rockies next week. The East is also heading into a cooler pattern with light snow chances ahead.

Short Term Forecast

No end in sight to storms for Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Range

California is in the flow right now with storm after storm bringing significant moisture to the state, including deep snowfall across the Sierra. It has been an incredible start to the season for Tahoe resorts. Check out this stunning sunrise view at Palisades Tahoe during a rare break in the action earlier this week.

The skiing has been excellent as well with a deeper-than-average snowpack along with consistent storms. Check out the scene at Kirkwood from earlier this week:

Forecast for Fri, Jan 6 – Sat, Jan 7:

Tahoe will see a break on Friday as a weakening storm moves into the Central Rockies with moderate snow totals expected across Utah and Western Colorado.

A storm will move into the Pacific Northwest with light to moderate snow for most areas, while the BC Coast Range will see locally heavy amounts. Snow will also pick back up over the Sierra during the day on Saturday as the next storm approaches.

A welcome cold front will also sweep across the East early Friday with snow showers developing across the Appalachians from New England to the Mid-Atlantic on Friday and Saturday.

Forecast for Sun, Jan 8 – Mon, Jan 9:

Back-to-back storms will impact California during this period with huge snow totals expected across the Sierra Nevada Range. The first storm will produce light snow across the Northwest, while the second storm will produce moderate to heavy snow across parts of the Northwest and Idaho.

A storm will also impact the Mid-Atlantic during this period with a mix of rain, snow, and ice expected.

Forecast for Tue, Jan 10 – Wed, Jan 11:

A strong storm will continue to impact the West during this period with deep totals expected across the Sierra once again, while portions of the Rockies and the Northwest could also see moderate to heavy snow. Across the East, a weak storm could bring another round of light snow to the Appalachians on Wednesday.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Thu, Jan 12 – Mon, Jan 16:

During the early part of this period, we may see a lull in the action across the Sierra as a storm takes aim at the Pacific Northwest. However, the Northwest storm may involve warm air and rain issues. By later in this period, an active storm track is likely to resume across the Sierra and into the Central Rockies.

The East could also see a storm during this period with snow potential extending into both the Mid-Atlantic and New England.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Monday (Jan 9).
