US and Canada Daily Snow
By Alan Smith, Meteorologist Posted 1 year ago March 10, 2023
Deep pattern from coast to coast
Summary
An active pattern is expected throughout North America this weekend and next week with frequent storms and heavy snow expected for many areas. The Sierra Nevada Range will see another monster storm cycle this weekend and again next week, but warmer air will result in higher snow levels. The PNW and Rockies will also get in on the action and the East will see multiple strong storms as well.
Short Term Forecast
Lots of snow in the forecast for ski regions throughout North America:
March is shaping up to be quite a month for a large portion of North America. The pattern over the next week will be very active from coast to coast with nearly all major ski regions picking up heavy snow at some point. Heavy snow in the West has certainly been a common occurrence this year, but the East will continue to see a late-season resurgence with multiple storms impacting New England and the Mid-Atlantic.
Forecast for Fri, Mar 10 – Sat, Mar 11:
A strong storm will impact a large portion of the West on Friday with lingering snow expected through Saturday. This storm will be warmer than recent storms, resulting in denser snow quality and higher snow levels for most areas. The Pacific Northwest will see colder temperatures and low snow levels, however.
A storm will also impact the Midwest and East from Friday through early Saturday. The Lower Great Lakes and Upper Mid-Atlantic including portions of NY and PA look to be most favored.
Forecast for Sun, Mar 12 – Mon, Mar 13:
Back-to-back weaker storms will impact the Sierra and the Southern/Central Rockies during this period, though the Sierra will pick up impressive totals. A stronger storm will move into the Cascades and BC with deep snow totals expected, though snow levels will also be on the rise.
A storm will also impact the Midwest on Sunday and East on Monday with the Mid-Atlantic looking most favored from New York to Virginia.
Forecast for Tue, Mar 14 – Wed, Mar 15:
Another strong storm cycle will take aim at the West during this period with the Sierra, Pacific Northwest, and Northern Rockies looking most favored, though high snow levels could be an issue at times for some areas. The Central Rockies are more of a wild card at this time but could get in on the heavy snow action as well.
A strong storm is also possible across the East during this period. As always, the precise track of coastal lows that move up the Eastern seaboard can be tough to nail down this far out. But for now, New England at least has the potential to see heavy snow with lighter snow for the Mid-Atlantic.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Thu, Mar 16 – Mon, Mar 20:
The pattern may relax somewhat during the West compared to the past few weeks, at least in terms of huge storm cycles. However, the storm door will still remain open with the Sierra and the Central/Southern Rockies looking like the most favored areas for snow. The East will also stay in an active pattern with more snow likely. Temperatures will be below average for mid-March across most major ski regions of North America.
Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Monday (March 13).
