A break for many following a deep storm cycle

Summary

A snowy pattern has continued across the West into early April with deep totals adding up across the Northwest & the Rockies over the past several days. High pressure will build into the West late this week, resulting in a break across the Rockies with warmer temps. The break will be short-lived across the PNW & BC as a series of storms will bring rain and snow this weekend & next week.

Short Term Forecast

Impressive snow totals over the previous 5 days:

Winter does not want to let go across the West even though it's April. An active pattern along with unseasonably cold temperatures resulted in heavy snow over the first few days of the month throughout the West. Oregon and Utah were the big winners in this pattern with 5-day totals (as of Tuesday) including 81 inches at Timberline and 64 inches at Snowbird!

Forecast for Wed, Apr 5 – Thu, Apr 6:

Light snow showers will linger across the Rockies on Wednesday followed by a drying trend on Thursday. A storm will reach the Cascades and BC Coast Range on Thursday with warmer air resulting in rain up to mid-mountain at many ski areas. Heavy snow is expected further north in Southeast Alaska.

A powerful storm will impact the Midwest and Northeast on Wednesday and Thursday, though snow will primarily be limited to Northwest Minnesota. From the Northern Great Lakes to Northern New England, a mix of rain and ice can be expected, while in the warm sector, Michigan and Western New York will see an elevated risk of severe thunderstorms.

Forecast for Fri, Apr 7 – Sat, Apr 8:

The Central and Southern Rockies will see mostly sunny skies, warmer temperatures, and a transition to spring skiing conditions during this period. Meanwhile, a series of storms involving mild air will track from southwest to northeast across the Cascades and into British Columbia with rain and snow expected, and the Northern Sierra looks to get in on the action as well.

The East will head into a quieter pattern overall, with exceptions including the Northern Great Lakes where some snow shower activity is possible, and the Southern Appalachians where rain is expected.

Forecast for Sun, Apr 9 – Mon, Apr 10:

Most of North America will stay relatively quiet during this period, except for the Northwest as storms continue to impact the Cascades and Western Canada with rain and snow expected.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue, Apr 11 – Sat, Apr 15:

The pattern will turn more active across the West during this period and temperatures will also trend colder. The storm track should favor the Northwest and Northern Rockies, though the Central Rockies could get in on the action as well. The East will see a significant warming trend during this period.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (April 7).
