Meh.

Summary

A dry cold front brushes Northern Utah today, but high pressure builds back in for the weekend. A system could bring light snow to Northern Utah early next week, but this pattern shift will be short-lived as high pressure once again takes control.

Short Term Forecast

Another morning of looking over the models and letting out an audible *sigh* afterward. Not good. Another morning of discouraging news. This is getting repetitive. I feel like a machine -- "sigh-borg," perhaps? *sigh*

We have a weak system passing to our east today. That is bringing a dry cold front through Utah. We could see some clouds and breezes, then a reinforcing shot of cool air into tonight and Friday. But snowfall looks to stay away. High pressure builds into the weekend with temps warming aloft and inversions likely strengthening in the valleys.

Our system for early next week is still in the cards, but the trends have continued to show it as a weak system with only light amounts. The latest WPC blend leaves much to be desired:

Maybe, just maybe, we can eke out a few inches next Tuesday, but my expectations are low. Very disappointing as for awhile there was hope that this system would be the beginning of a stormier period.

Extended Forecast

Our hopes of a more persistent pattern change are being dashed because the ridge of high pressure, which retrogrades westward early next week to allow our weak trough to drop in, subsequently rebuilds farther east later next week and is once again too close for comfort. This ridge will block additional storms from entering the region through the first week of February. Here is the latest EPS height anomalies for February 9th:

Ridge on the coast still going strong. Sad. The glimmer of hope is that the GEFS height anomalies keep the ridge a bit more amplified and off the coast, so storms may have a chance to drop down the backside into Utah. Otherwise, we've got nothing at this point other than to say that anything outside the 10-day window is notoriously fickle and we could easily see models swing back to a more favorable setup. For now, however, we must content ourselves with sunny days, groomers, and chalky hardpack.
