Sunday Forecast

Summary

Blocking high pressure remains the dominant feature. A weak trough will bring cooler air and chance for light snow midweek. Big storms continue to look unlikely in next 10 days.

Short Term Forecast

I really wish I had better news but I don't. Our ridge along the coast is going to keep us mostly dry for the foreseeable future. It's more of the same of what we've seen in January. We do see the ridge shift west enough for a trough to dive into the area middle of this week, but trends have not been our friend. This system looks very weak for Utah with only chances for very light snow. Here is the latest WPC precip blend:

Probably just a dusting at best late Tuesday or early Wednesday. The main impact will be a reinforcing shot of cold air that may help clear inversions, but that's about it.

High pressure strengthens along the coast late week.

Extended Forecast

Models all have the strong high pressure ridge just off the west coast. We may see some very weak systems ride down the backside of the ridge into Utah over the next two weeks, but significant storms look unlikely. There is some slight indication of a pattern change showing up again around mid-month, but we all remember what happened last time we saw a pattern change in the long-range -- it vanished. We need these pattern changes to make it within the 7-day window it seems to have any confidence in them. Right now we are a long way from that point.
