Eyes on Next Week

Summary

A mostly dry week through Thanksgiving, although there is a chance for a few snow showers on Wednesday with minimal accumulation. It is looking likely that we will see a storm next week to close out the month of November.

Short Term Forecast

Not much going on in the short-term. However, we've talked about a weak, decaying storm that will be brushing Utah on Wednesday of this week. I feel like I keep writing off this system based on the latest models, only for one of the models then to show it maintaining enough strength to bring us a bit of snow. Right now, it's the GFS that shows the storm dipping energy far enough south for Northern Utah mountains to see a few snow showers on Wednesday. The Euro still keeps us dry.

We have high confidence in clouds and breezes increasing heading into Wednesday, but low confidence in what we could see in terms of precip. In a best-case-scenario, I think we see some snow showers and maybe an inch or two. Most likely outcome is some light snow flurries with no accumulation. And then there's a chance we see nothing at all.

We will clear out by Thanksgiving day and the holiday and weekend look dry with warming aloft as high pressure takes full control.

Extended Forecast

We continue to watch next week for our next storm of any substance. Right now, we have very good consistency in different models showing a storm impacting Utah in the November 28-30 timeframe with the most likely outcome for snow on Tuesday, Nov 29. This is reflected well in the GEFS plumes:

You can see our small system middle of this week with the much large chances for snow next week. The ensembles themselves still have a huge spread with anywhere from 0.1" to 2" of liquid. Not much confidence in the details, but feeling good on the general timing and idea of a switch to storminess.

As we head into December, we may go back to a drier pattern. I don't see a dominant ridge, but we are undergoing a shift that may pump a shortwave ridge over the area for a bit.
