One More Storm

Summary

Moisture continues to stream into California with Utah seeing leftovers. Some snow showers Saturday and Sunday with the next wave arriving Sunday night into Monday. Monday fresh snow likely!

Short Term Forecast

An active pattern continues to impact the western states, including Utah. California has been taking the brunt of this pattern with another wave moving in later today to the Sierra Nevada. That means moisture will once again stream into the Great Basin. Utah will see some light snow lift into the area today, mostly in the central Utah mountains, but some of it could make it as far north as the Cottonwoods/PC. Really, mostly just clouds but some light snow and minor accumulation this afternoon and overnight is not out of the question.

Then, the next more significant wave will slowly sag into our area out of the northwest late on Sunday. This is somewhat similar to the wave we just saw on Thursday night. We will see winds increase ahead of this system. We will also see warmer air pulled into the area. This is going to mean denser snow that will primarily fall Sunday night into Monday morning.

As for amounts, I'm not really seeing this as a big storm. NBM showing generally 0.5-1.0" of liquid total for the northern mountains of Utah between now and end of day on Monday:

The Euro ensembles showing a mean for Brighton of about 0.75":

It's not nothing, but it's not a huge storm and it's also rather disorganized. When you add in the warmer temps and denser snow, I think keeping expected amounts low is a good idea. I'm generally expecting 4-8" by Monday morning for Northern mountains. Enough for some creamy turns, but not a particularly deep powder day.

Extended Forecast

We should see a break for most of next week from late Monday through at least Friday, December 9. Models still showing a good chance for a weak storm next weekend (Dec 10-11). After that, there's still very little agreement. I'm not going to worry about it too much for now.
