Next Storm Moves in for the Weekend

Summary

We have a break in the weather today, although we should see plenty of clouds and overcast. The next storm starts to send moisture into Utah late Friday into early Saturday with waves of moisture continuing through the weekend.

Short Term Forecast

Yesterday's storm went essentially as expected. Highest amounts were in BCC with 12-13" of new snow reported. 8-9" reported in both LCC and PC area mountains. Generally 5-7" elsewhere in northern Utah. Skiing at last chair yesterday was quite good so I expect runs this morning to also be very good.

We have a break today with clouds and some breezes. The next system is ready to bring moisture back into Utah as early as later today into tonight. The first wave will continue into Saturday morning.

Then, it looks like subsequent waves in a general southwest flow continue to bring periods of mountain snow through Saturday night and Sunday, before tapering off early on Monday. You can see the storm drop to our southwest in the below animation:

This is a tough storm to forecast because of the intricacies of the individual waves of moisture that move north into Utah, but our OpenSnow algorithm shows about 2" of liquid precip by Monday:

The "peaks" of green bars show periods that are more likely to see precip. We can see Saturday morning is one peak, then again Saturday night, and again Sunday afternoon. We shall see if that turns out to be the case.

I think each day through Monday has powder potential. This is a good weekend to just pay attention to radar and webcams and be ready to pounce when the snow is piling up!

Almost all resorts are at or above average for the month of March and this final storm should push us further ahead.

Extended Forecast

We could see a few days of drier weather and general break in the action middle of the upcoming week. Models show a storm for later in the week. A few runs have shown precip arriving as early as Thursday, but most hold off until later on Friday and bring snow into Saturday of next weekend. This storm has a lot of question marks with some models, namely the GFS, dropping it to our west and limiting precip. The Euro is more of a direct hit. We will watch this over the next few days.

Also, there's some consensus developing in another trough for around April 9-10 that could bring more chances for snow.
