Can We Trust Farmer's Almanac 2024-2025 Winter Forecast?

can we trust farmer's almanac 2024-2025 winter forecast

The Farmer's Almanac publishes forecasts every August that look ahead to the upcoming winter season. These are widely circulated as a "bonafide forecast" for what to expect during the winter months across the United States.

There is also not one but two Farmer’s Almanacs. The "Old Farmer’s Almanac" was started in 1792, while the "Farmer's Almanac" began publishing in 1818.

Can we trust the Farmer's Almanac 2024-2025 winter forecast?

As we discussed after the record-breaking 2022-2023 winter season, there continues to be no track record of accuracy from the Farmer's Almanac and every other long-range forecast for the upcoming winter season.

But to have some fun, we'll go ahead and look at the forecast from each almanac for the upcoming 2024-2025 winter season.

But before you get too excited or sad about your particular region, let's look back at how each almanac forecast played out for the 2023-2024 winter season.

The temperature outlook from both almanacs was nothing short of bad.

Most of the United States recorded warmer than average temperatures, while record warmth persisted for most of the winter across the Upper Midwest and New England.

The precipitation (snow) outlook was almost equally as bad, with the exception being the Old Farmer's Almanac calling for snowy conditions across the central and southern Rockies.

The 2023-24 winter season was a classic El Niño winter with the southwest receiving above-average snowfall.

What does meteorologist Eric Fisher from CBS Boston think of these winter outlooks? "Don't believe it."

So to answer the question from the start, NO, you should NOT trust the winter forecast from the Farmer's Almanac.

Technology will continue to advance and someday we might be able to accurately and consistently forecast weather patterns 3-6 months in advance. Until then, upgrade to OpenSnow All-Access to view the most accurate 10-day snow forecast for any location, worldwide.
