New snow expected this weekend following Pineapple Express

Summary

Pull out your umbrella today, as a warm storm system from the South Pacific and California curls into Idaho, bringing rain at most ski areas except at the highest elevations. The good news is that a cold front will push through Thursday night, and significant quantities of new snow are expected Friday-Sunday. Mostly sunny skies are expected next week for Spring Break.

Short Term Forecast

Snow amounts predicted through Sunday on Weatherbell are showing lighter amounts of snow than the upside of snowfall predicted in the forecasts.

Snow levels are expected to range from 7,500-8,500 feet on Thursday, depending on location, making for soggy conditions at most ski areas. A cold front will advance across Idaho on Thursday night, bringing snow levels down to 4,000 feet, and substantial snowfall is expected Friday-Sunday.

Schweitzer Mountain and Silver Mountain are expected to receive 4-8 inches of snow, Pomerelle 5-13 inches, Pebble Creek 4-8 inches, Brundage Mountain 2-5 inches, Bogus Basin 3-7 inches of snow and Sun Valley 3-7 inches of snow in Friday-Sunday. Temperatures will remain more winter-like through that period, with freezing temperatures at night and highs in the low 30s.

Extended Forecast

The skies are expected to clear by Monday, and mostly sunny skies are forecast for Spring Break week statewide. There may be some clouds here and there. Temperatures will remain cool, however, so the Hawaiian attire for spring skiing may be a bit chilly until later in the week. It should warm up a little bit more each day through the week. Don't forget the sun screen!
