Saturday Morning Snowfall Report...

Update

The storm that moved through the past 24 hours brought 4-9 inches of snow to the mountains.  The 5 day totals have slowly piled up to 1-2 feet.

That was exactly what was expected from this storm.  It's always nice when you nail the forecast as a forecaster.

Here is a look at the base of Alpine Meadows this morning.  It is looking wintry with a nice fresh layer of snow for today.

There is colder air with some sun and snow showers around today behind the storm.  Highs will only be in the 30's on the mountains to around 40 degrees at lake level through Sunday.  Winds are gusting to around 25 mph this morning on the mountain tops, and that is where we expect them to peak out today.  Sunday the wind gusts may increase to 40+ mph by afternoon with the next storm moving in.

The next storm moves in Sunday night.  This has been forecast as a weak storm all week.  There is not much moisture and forcing with this storm.  Here is a look at the total precip forecast on the latest GFS model run.

The snow should mainly fall Sunday night and showers could linger into Monday morning.  Winds should gust to 40+ mph on the  mountains again Monday.  The reinforcing shot of cold air keeps highs in the 30's on Monday.  Snow levels with this storm look to start and stay below lake level.

Here is the updated snowfall forecast.  It really hasn't changed much over the last several days.

storm fcst

High pressure quickly builds off the coast by Tuesday with sun and a warmer temperatures.  Highs should be in the 40's on the mountains to near 50 at lake level Tuesday through Thursday.

Thursday night a cold trough will try to push down from the North but the latest trend is to keep it to our North.  The GFS is the furthest South.  We will have to keep watching the track, but right now a dusting up to an inch of snow seems like the high end with the cold front Thursday night.  It could bring a quick shot of colder air for Friday lowering highs back into the 30's and 40's.

High pressure looks like it will quickly build back in again for next weekend with sun and highs rebounding back into the 40's and 50's.

Right now I'm not seeing any significant storms in the long-range as the ridge of high pressure near the coast keeps the area dry.

Stay tuned...BA
