Forecast Flip

Summary

New model solutions have changed today from previous thinking that the active Western storm track would stay north of Arizona. Models now stall the west coast trough off of California over the coming days, finally bringing it into AZ Tuesday-Wednesday 12/6-7.

Short Term Forecast

Mostly cloudy skies and mild temperatures  this weekend out ahead of the aforementioned west coast storm. The system will dray a subtropical moisture plume into southern and south central AZ Saturday leading to widespread rain, snow levels in the Whites will be above 9500'. Sunday into Monday light rain showers expand region wide with snow levels remaining high, little to no accumulation. Action picks up Tuesday as the storm finally makes a break inland, snow showers look to develop through the day, with snow levels gradually falling to near 7000'. The cold core enters Tuesday night into Wednesday with decent snow production. The GFS and the Euro are both on board with this solution, the GFS being more aggressive with snow totals calling for up to a foot for Snowbowl and a bit less in the Whites, the Euro on the other hand about half that. Stay tuned, hopefully this holds and will have some good news in the Monday snow blog (slog).

Extended Forecast

As I just now glance at the 18Z GFS (latest run) that just dropped it is hinting at a slower progression of the storm next week, let's hope.

The Western storm track looks to remain active for a couple of week, feeling optimistic.

Snow prognostics into mid month, double for mountain peaks.
